Well yesterday when I was on the computer, an error message come up out of nowhere with this symbol
ex.gif

Saying something about a corrupt file. The error message went away and I didn't think much of it.. When I turned on my computer today I got this blue screen that said it was checking one of my drives for consistency.

Whats this all about?

Not a good sign.

Your hard drive is most likely on the verge of dying. Not guaranteed, but that's a pretty strong warning sign.

Be damn sure to get a copy of anything important off of it ASAP.

Chkdsk

I think CHKDSK is a program within your PC that checks your HD for errors
and corrects them if possible.
This might help,Go into Programs, then accesories,Click on defrag,or optimizes drive c:This should be done monthly.
Ever play 52 card pick-up,this is what happens to your HD if you don't
Optimize it(Defragment it)It puts all your files back in place

Defrag may speed things up a bit, but won't fix any errors.

98% of the time, this is a sign that your hard drive is dying

No way to say. It could be your next reboot, it could be 30 seconds, it could be 90 days.

If you want it, get a copy of it off that hard drive ASAP.

if you can fit it all, or you can burn it to disk. the best option if you have it would be an external hard drive. dont matter how you save it, as long as you do.

Whats the best way to save it? On a USB Flash Drive?

G, you should look into backing up your important shit on a regular basis, not just when you get the chkdsk thingy. Or you can backup the entire hard disk by buying backup software and a spare hard drive.

If your hard drive were to go bad all you have to do is put in the spare and boot up. You're back up in seconds.

TTinCO is right - CHKDSK will do a physical scan of the hard drive and flag any bad or suspect sectors as unusable, and at the same time do it's best to move and data off of those sectors - not always possible. This should give you a little extra life if it worked, but your days (hours?? minutes??) are numbered. I just got my PC out of the shop - put in two SATA drives and a RAID card so I could mirror them - now is one goes bad the other is an exact copy and I can replace the bad one and all the data will get rebuilt from the good one.

That will almost always take out electronic componentry, rarely a mechanical device like a hard drive, although the electronics on the hard drive can be affected. If that would happen, though, a good hardware guy can still get the data off the spindles. The problem that it sounds like Gyne is coming upon is physical failure on the spindles, and once that happens, you're screwed.

Costs a lot of money to hire those hardware guys. Always have off-site backups of your important data.
